Ardashir's Palace

Originally a vassal of the Arsacid king Artabanus, Ardashir rebelled and carved out an empire of his own. His successor, Shapur I, would complete his conquests and carry the fight deep into Roman territory. Below is a palace built by Ardashir (r. 224-240) in modern-day Firuzabad. The palace's ruins include a heavily fortified audience hall, vaulted iwan, or arch, and a fire temple located just outside the main complex.
